I’m super happy to announce that the A5 card of THE FACELESS GOD – our Demi-God Love tier reward - will be handcrafted and printed by L.F. OSR. In addition to being an awesome artist and designer (they recently released A Packet of Particular Picks - check it out!) Leo runs an artisanal print press where they produce handmade limited editions of OSR zines and supplements, including Knave, Rogueland, their own A Packet of Particular Picks, and Darkness Moves by Perplexing Ruins (yes, the same Perplexing Ruins who painted our surreal illustrations for BROKEN LUCK).
Leo is a real nerd-expert-artist of the printing process. They use high-quality pigment inks and amazing papers, and they have even hacked their own printer to refine their craft (one day I hope to see it in person). I’m so thrilled that they are going to print the Faceless God Card – and we couldn’t have done it without your support.
This card is really close to my heart. THE FACELESS GOD has been a recurring villain throughout my RPG adventures. Over the years it has developed into an obsession. I’ve run several campaigns where The Faceless God was the archenemy, plotting the world’s demise. It has appeared in Sci-Fi and Post Apo games, as well as in Med Fan ones. It’s everywhere. EVERYWHERE.
It has made its way into my writing too - prose, but also game content and random tables and mechanics. It appears in Knock Issue 2 in a kind of Med Fan version. It’s present in BROKEN LUCK, at the end of the zine, as a member of the pantheon of mad Gods. And it’s printed on the back of this gorgeous A5 card, in its complete and terrible splendour for the first time, full body and face (or not) with its dead moon companion by its side.
This card is going to be printed on acid-free felt archive paper. Hand cut. Handcrafted rounded corners, whaaat? Yes! It’s going to be super beautiful, but it’s also going to be game content.
It’s a gouache painting. It’s the first drawing I ever commissioned from Perplexing Ruins, and probably it’s the reason this zine exists. A few months ago, when I first stumbled across the OSR/indie scene, I found PerplexingRuins’ Instagram and what I saw there totally blew my mind. Right away I had to ask him if he could paint THE FACELESS GOD, and the miracle happened. I had dreamed of it for years, but here it was, in front of me, exactly how I had imagined it - no, even better than anything I could come up with. He had painted it to perfection. Here is a short audio clip where he speaks about his work on this piece
Pledges at the Demi-God Love level will receive this A5 handcrafted card from L.F. OSR. On the front is a full-size painting of THE FACELESS GOD. On the back are random tables of curses, blessings, and dark gifts to use in your game.
Here is a test print made by L.F. OSR:
Look at those inks, look at that paper! I want one too!
If you’d like to receive this incredible piece of art, consider upgrading your pledge to the Demi-God Love level. You’ll also get access to the soundtrack of the zine Last Knight in Town by Spooky Rusty. It’s dreamy, and I’ve listened to it relentlessly as I was writing BROKEN LUCK.
If you want to hear more of Perplexing Ruins’ story and discover his journey from the ancient forests of Germany to becoming one of the most unique and talented artists of the indie TTRPG scene, check out this episode of The Lost Bay Podcast. On the show I interview TTRPG indie creators and artists about their inspirations, sources, and creative processes.
